I am very pleased! I gave subcutaneous fluids to one of my mom's older cats several times while my mom was away, and it did not end in disaster even once! The cat was very chill and sat on my lap while I inflated her. But now I'm curious. Do you happen to know why subcutaneous fluid seem to be such a standard part of cat care, and I don't think I've every heard of humans getting their fluids subcutaneously? Is it just because we have nice prominent veins and no claws?

Subcutaneous fluids are only effective if the patient already has reasonably good perfusion, if they’re already compromised then they wont be absorbed and intravenous fluids are required instead,

You can tell a human “You need to drink Xmls of electrolyte solution.” Good luck telling a cat to do anything.

One of my very old sketches, waaaay back from when I still drew with a pencil on paper. I was really into the concept of angels being selfish humans who steal wings from birds, and I’ve done many variations of the concept in my youth.

How is castration handled in typical pet mammals (cats and dogs)? I only know how it works with farm animals, and honestly hadn't thought about it until that weird anon ask. With my farm, we handle the castration without a vet, because with goats it's as simple as specialized rubber band on balls.

The rubber ring (Do not ever try to use an ordinary, household rubber band on anything!) is simple, but there’s some debate as to whether it’s genuinely the best way to do it. While the pain of the rubber band might be duller than a knife, the duration of the pain is longer, and it takes animals treated this way longer to return to normal behavior than their cut brethren. For this reason using a rubber band on dog or cat would be unacceptable, and people have been prosecuted for animal cruelty for doing so.

Cats and dogs are castrated (and spayed) under general anaesthesia. They are unconscious when this procedure is performed so they’re not aware of it and don’t feel it being done.

The surgical techniques vary a little because the two species have slightly different anatomy. Cats typically have a scrotal castration, an incision through the scrotal skin to access the testes, while dogs typically undergo a pre-scrotal castration, placing the incision just in front of the scrotal skin. Most cats wont need sutures, but all dogs will.

You can do goats, pigs and other livestock under anaesthesia this way, and many people who keep these animals as pets elect to do so because it’s kinder for the animal and there’s no great big open wound they need to monitor.

The patients are supposed to be quiet for a few days, but most of them bounce back like nothing had happened. We always give our patients pain relief medications, which is an issue currently debated in livestock production.
